Summer Camps in China: Current Status and Challenges in AI Era
March 17, 2026 @8am ET
Facilitator: Gabrielle Raill
Featured Panelists: Robert (Fangyang) Qian, John (Jorgi) Jorgenson
Session Description
Join us for an in-depth exploration of the rapidly evolving summer camp industry in China, which is projected to exceed a market size of 100 billion yuan by 2025. This session will trace the industry’s journey from its early days of public welfare and simple supervision (1990-2005) through its expansive period of international influence (2006-2018) to the current era of high-quality transformation driven by national “Double Reduction” policies.
As the market shifts toward a younger demographic—with children in preschool and primary school now accounting for 45% of participants—parents are increasingly prioritizing educational value and safety over simple recreation. We will analyze diverse case studies, ranging from AI programming and cultural research camps to high-intensity character-building and wilderness survival programs.
A significant portion of this session will be dedicated to the impact of Artificial Intelligence on youth development. We will discuss the critical challenges facing today’s youth, including:
- Cognitive Reshaping: Addressing information overload and the potential weakening of critical thinking and originality.
- Social and Emotional Health: Understanding the risk of social skill degradation and loss of empathy due to excessive machine interaction.
- Future Preparedness: Redefining “core competitiveness” in an era where AI replaces traditional jobs, focusing instead on soft skills like leadership and complex problem-solving.
- Security Risks: Navigating the threats of personal privacy leakage and the abuse of Deepfake technology.
The session will conclude with a forward-looking perspective on how technology can be harnessed for immersive experiences and smart security while maintaining deep educational integrity.
Session Highlights:
- Evolutionary Overview: From public service to a multi-billion dollar professional industry.
- Market Insights: Data on the booming demand in third and fourth-tier cities and the rising expectations of post-80s and 90s parents.
- AI Era Strategies: How camp organizers can adapt to the challenges of information overload and career uncertainty.
- Future Trends: The shift toward theme segmentation, standardized regulation, and tech-enabled quality upgrades.
