Celebrating Global Leadership: The 2026 Dare to Lead Award
At the International Camping Fellowship (ICF), our mission is to foster a global community of camp professionals who share a commitment to the transformative power of the camp experience. Central to that mission is the advancement of diverse leadership and the breaking of systemic barriers. This is why we are immensely proud to stand alongside the Women in Camp Summit (WICS) in celebrating the recipients of the 2026 Dare to Lead Award: Kelley Freridge and Laurie Pearson.
The Dare to Lead Award is not simply a recognition of tenure; it is a tribute to those who exhibit the courage to reshape our industry. These individuals bring those from the margins to the center, advocating for a camp community that is more inclusive, reflective, and equitable for women, nonbinary folx, and BIPOC professionals.
Meet the 2026 Recipients
The ICF joins Colette Marquardt, CEO of ACA Illinois, in honoring these two trailblazers whose work ripples far beyond their local borders.
Kelley Freridge
Chief Marketing Officer, Alliance for Camp Health Kelley’s career is a masterclass in using narrative and strategic engagement to build “communities of care.” From her leadership at the American Camp Association to her roles at Patagonia and Chaco, she has consistently used her platform to drive transformational impact. As an elected leader on the Rockford Public Schools Board of Education, she proves that the values we teach at camp—belonging, confidence, and intentionality—are essential in every facet of public life.
Laurie Pearson
Senior Director of Research & Learning, American Camp Association, Inc. Data and research are the backbone of a modern, professionalized camping industry. For nearly a decade, Laurie has translated complex research into accessible, field-driven tools that empower camp staff globally. Through her work with the Character at Camp Initiative, she has ensured that camps have the resources and funding necessary to innovate. Her dedication extends to her volunteer service on the board of Clearwater Camp for Girls, embodying the lifelong commitment we strive to see in our alumni.
Why “Daring to Lead” Matters
The criteria for this award mirror the values the ICF holds dear. To lead “daringly” in 2026 means:
-
Widening the Circle: Actively moving people from the margins to the center of our professional community.
-
Critical Thinking: Challenging how our work in camp impacts the broader world.
-
Mentorship: Lifting others through collaboration rather than competition.
-
Resource Access: Breaking down barriers to information so that all professionals, regardless of geography or budget, can thrive.
“Kelley and Laurie are reshaping the system from the grassroots, and their impact will continue for generations to come.” — Colette Marquardt
